Mastering The Art of Argument

Debate and Critical Thinking

This class is designed for learners ages 11–15.

Because debate is interactive, this class includes both asynchronous work and live sessions, there is no asynchronous only option.

Learners will still receive feedback on their submissions, and all projects can be sent in digitally via photo or video if not already digital.   The Great Flipside is a high-energy online course designed for middle schoolers ready to sharpen their minds and find their voices. In a world of "echo chambers" and quick takes, this class serves as a training ground for critical thinking, perspective-taking, and the art of the civil debate. We don't just teach students how to argue; we teach them how to think through a problem from every possible angle. For many middle schoolers, expressing an opinion can feel intimidating, or they may struggle to understand why someone else sees the world differently. This class provides the "X-ray vision" needed to look beneath the surface of an argument to understand:

  • The Anatomy of an Argument: How to build a "case" using logic, evidence, and emotional resonance.

  • The Perspective Pivot: We practice "flipping the script" to argue for the side we don't necessarily agree with, building empathy and mental flexibility.

  • Fact vs. Friction: Students learn to spot logical fallacies and misinformation, becoming savvy consumers of news and social media.

  • Confident Public Speaking: We turn nervous energy into persuasive power, helping students learn to speak clearly, listen actively, and respond thoughtfully.

Each module is designed to be interactive, independent, and hands-on:

1. Asynchronous Work: Each week, learners will find a new module in their online classroom. Each module begins with an engaging lesson that dives deeply into the week’s topic, such as “The Power of Persuasion” or “Detecting Bias.” Students then explore three thought-provoking questions designed to spark independent analysis and reflection. To apply their learning creatively, they complete a project like an Evidence Board, Counter-Argument Map, or Persuasion Poster, building a Thinker’s Toolkit—a portfolio showcasing their ability to deconstruct complex ideas. The module is designed for 1–2 hours of self-paced learning each week.

 2. Live Weekly Meetings: This is where the magic happens! Together, we dive into "The Arena." We will discuss the weekly topic, participate in structured mini-debates, and practice real-time rebuttals. Learners also have the opportunity to share their Creative Projects and get immediate feedback from their peers. Perfect for: Aspiring lawyers, future leaders, writers, and any learner looking to build confidence in their communication skills and navigate complex conversations in a fun, supportive environment.
