Raising Brain Emergency Response Plan

I. GENERAL INFORMATION

  • School Name: Raising Brain Microschool
     

  • Location(s):
     

    • Main Classroom: 3417 Bear Pond Lane - Amissville, Virginia 20106
       

    • Outdoor Classroom (Creek Site): entrance (marked) is at the left edge of the backyard, the cleared path will take you directly to the creekside classroom. 

 

  • Emergency Coordinator: Ashley Bobst
     

  • Backup Coordinator: Matthew Bobst
     

  • Local Emergency Services Contacted & Aware of Creek Location: ✅ Yes ☐ No
     

 

II. EMERGENCY TYPES & PROTOCOLS

1. Medical Emergency

 

Symptoms may include: allergic reactions, asthma attacks, fractures, cuts, heat exhaustion, etc.

  • Steps:
     

    1. Administer basic first aid (staff trained in CPR/First Aid).
       

    2. Call 911 if life-threatening or unclear.
       

    3. Contact parents/guardians.
       

    4. Record incident in incident log.
       

    5. Escort child to main classroom or await EMS, depending on severity.
       

Creek Consideration: Always carry a mobile first aid kit and a fully charged phone. Ensure one adult knows how to navigate emergency access for EMS near the creek.

 

2. Fire (Indoor or Outdoor)

 

  • Evacuation Route: Exit the building; proceed to the primary outdoor assembly point (by student garden).
     

  • At the Creek: Evacuate uphill, away from dry brush areas. Regroup at the secondary meeting point near the main building.
     

  • Do Not: Attempt to fight fires larger than a small, contained source.
     

 

3. Severe Weather (Thunderstorm, Tornado, Flash Flood)

 

  • Indoor Protocol: Shelter indoors, away from windows. Use the main house for tornado watches/severe weather.

  • At the Creek: Immediately evacuate to higher ground and return to the main school.
     

Flash Flood Specifics:

 

  • Staff must monitor weather apps for flood warnings.
     

  • Use creek-specific evacuation route (the path in and out to the school).
     

  • Never allow students to enter the creek during/after heavy rainfall.
     

 

4. Lost or Missing Child

 

  • Immediate Action: Call “CODE YELLOW”. Freeze the movement of all groups.
     

  • Last Seen Location: Interview students & staff.

  • Creek Protocol: Check AirTag GPS location and  the water’s edge immediately.

 

  • Call 911 if not located within 10 minutes.

 

  • Notify guardians and maintain search log.
     

 

5. Intruder or Dangerous Person (Lockdown)

 

  • Main Classroom:
     

    • Lock doors and windows.
       

    • Gather students into safest interior area.
       

    • Silence and turn off lights.
       

  • At the Creek:
     

    • Evacuate quietly via creek-side trail to alternative off-site location OR hide in natural cover and silence group.
       

    • Staff carry emergency whistle for alert signals (3 blasts = danger, 1 long = all-clear).
       

 

III. SITE-SPECIFIC PROCEDURES

 

Outdoor Creek Classroom Safety Guidelines: (See Outdoor Classroom/Creek Policy & Procedures)

 

  • Adult:Child Ratio: At least 1:8. Two adults minimum always.
     

  • Check-In System: Roll call at arrival and departure.
     

  • Creek Boundary Flags: Clearly mark limits students cannot pass.
     

  • Wildlife Protocol: Observe from distance. If threatened (e.g., venomous snake), evacuate calmly.
     

 

IV. COMMUNICATION PLAN

  • Staff carry:
     

    1. Cell phones with group texting capability
       

    2. Two-way radios (if signal unreliable)

    3. Forest Safety Kit

  • Notification hierarchy:
     

    1. Internal Staff
       

    2. Emergency Services (if needed)
       

    3. Guardians via text/call
       

    4. All adults on campus for broader support
       

 

V. TRAINING & DRILLS

  • Quarterly Emergency Drills:
     

    • Fire

Annual Training:

  • CPR/First Aid refresher
     

  • Emergency response walk-through
     

  • Child safety and de-escalation
     

VI. SUPPLIES & EQUIPMENT

Each Classroom & Creek Site Should Have:

  • First Aid Kit (with EpiPen, gloves, bandages, antiseptics)
     

  • Emergency Contact Binder
     

  • Flashlights
     

  • Whistle (per adult)
     

  • Water and snacks
     

  • Child-safe walkie talkies (optional but useful)

 

VII. AFTER-ACTION

  • Debrief with staff and students.
     

  • Complete incident report.
     

  • Contact appropriate authorities (if necessary).
     

  • Review response effectiveness and adjust plan as needed.
