​The Ornithology Unit Study invites learners to explore the fascinating world of birds through science, biology, geography, animal behavior, adaptation, and creative discovery. From colorful rainforest birds to familiar backyard species, learners will uncover the incredible diversity and unique abilities of birds around the world.

Through engaging lessons and hands-on exploration, learners will study:
 
The Resplendent Quetzal – Explore one of the world’s most beautiful birds, its rainforest habitat, cultural significance, adaptations, and conservation. Learners will also dive into the world of advertising by exploring how companies use appeals to emotion and disruptive advertising to capture attention. They will then use what they’ve learned to create their own advertisement focused on the Resplendent Quetzal.

Pigeons: The Hidden Intelligence of a Familiar Bird – Discover the fascinating world of pigeons and how these often-overlooked birds have shaped human history. Learners will explore how pigeons arrived in America, their important role in wartime communication, and the incredible navigation abilities that allow them to find their way home.

Through the study of pigeon anatomy and physiology, learners will investigate adaptations like magnetoreception, sensory systems, and how pigeons process the world around them. They will also explore the science of vision through saccadic suppression and discover the remarkable biology behind one of the world’s most familiar birds. Learners will research a fancy pigeon breed and design their own unique pigeon using the Pigeonetics Roll-a-Dice Designer Pigeon activity.

Parrots: The Science of Talking Birds – Explore how parrots and other vocal-learning birds communicate through sound. Learners will investigate bird anatomy, the science behind speech, the Pink Trombone speech simulator, and esophageal speech.

Using a free online spectrogram tool, learners will visualize the physics of birdsong by analyzing recordings of talking parrots and crows, comparing sound patterns, and exploring the math of frequency peaks. They’ll discover how birds create sounds and why some species are incredible mimics.

The Secret Life of Birds: Sleep & Survival – Explore the fascinating world of bird sleep and discover the incredible ways different species rest and survive. Learners will investigate how some birds, like the Common Swift, can sleep while flying, and how birds have adapted their sleeping behaviors to fit their unique environments.
​
Through this lesson, learners will explore unihemispheric slow-wave sleep, the science behind the flexor tendon mechanism that allows birds to rest while perched, and the surprising connection between birds, ecosystems, and bird poop islands.
To bring the lesson to life, learners will create a fun bird-inspired art project based on the work of artist Sue Mitchell, turning an unusual topic into a creative exploration of science and nature.
